Sports Coaching 5 day Workshops

This comprehensive course, inclusive of five workshops (approximately one a month), is aimed at aspiring coaches, newly qualified instructors and competitors wishing to move into the field of coaching.

General content:

Session 1
• What is the UKCC?
• The role of the coach
• Coaching philosophy
• Goal setting and action planning
• Coaching and learning styles
• Assessing coaching/rider performance and using feedback
• Risk assessment

Session 2
• Establishing learning
• Understanding horse and rider fitness
• Flatwork performance
• The scales of training and FEI definitions of movements
• Developing performance from the young horse to the advanced horse
• Rider balance, position and weaknesses
• Using a physiotherapist

Session 3
• Managing a coaching programme
• Polework and gridwork for improving the athlete
• Walking courses and distances
• Exercises for performance and correcting jumping problems
• Warming up and collecting rings
• BE and FEI rules
• The importance of reflection

Session 4
• Coaching cross country, simulated and in the field
• Warm-up and cooling down
• Coaching on different terrain and in difficult conditions
• Understanding pace, lines, rhythm and balance
• Walking courses
• Coaching at an event

Session 5
• Understanding qualifications and knowledge of FEI competitions
• Awareness of a performance pathway for horse and rider LTAD
• Understanding and dealing with challenge and stress
• Awareness of nutritional requirements for the athlete
• Building a portfolio
